1What is the Kenya Pastoralists Week?
The Kenya Pastoralists’ Week (KPW) is a multi-stakeholder partnership project held annually since 2003. This event brings together different stakeholders drawn from individual pastoralists, pastoralists’ associations, government, private sector, academia and mainstream civil society. Each year about 1000 people grace the event.
2Where will the event take place? When?
KPW 2018 will be held at the Masai Technical Training Institute (MTTI), Kajiado County from 10th April to 12th April 2018 under the theme: Supporting climate smart pastoralism.
3Who are the organizers of this year's event?
This year’s event is organized by the Centre for Minority Rights Development (CEMIRIDE) with the support of Kajiado County Government, in partnership with the Netherlands Development Organization, the Pastoralist Parliamentary Group (PPG), the ASAL Stakeholders Forum, the Dry lands Learning and Capacity Building Initiative, the Pastoral Development Network of Kenya, the League of Pastoralists Women, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), the Management University of Africa (MUA), Africa Nazarene University, Univeristy of Nairobi (UoN), the Agriculture Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP), the Kenya Land Alliance (KLA), Dupoto E Maa, the Neighbourhood Initiative Association (NIA),the Kenya Market Trust (KMT), the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council (KLMC) and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA).
4What is special about KPW 2018?
This year’s event is will not only be the most successful but the biggest, as for the first time, all the 15 pastoralist counties will be attending on invitation of the Host, His Excellency Joseph ole Lenku, the Governor, Kajiado County, and the Hon Johnson Osoi, the Speaker, Kajiado County Assembly who is also the Chairperson, County Assemblies Forum.
5Who will be participating?
During KPW 2018 about 500 pastoralists are expected to attend the national conference and another 1000 are expected at the exhibitions per day. This translates to about 4500 attendees during the event. This will be over and above approximately; 1. 130 county government officials from 13 pastoralist counties 2. 200 civil society organizations members, 3. 10 International Non-Governmental Organisations, 4. 5 Research and academic Institutions 5. 50 Members of Parliament 6. 10 Mainstream print and broadcast media organisations 7. 30 Private Sector institutions
6Which activities will be taking place?
A number of activities have been lined up to support the theme of KPW 2018 Supporting Climate Smart Agriculture. These include: a) A three Day National Climate Smart Conference on Pastoralism. b) A three day products exhibition. C) Gala Dinner to celebrate pastoralist role in the country’s economic, social and cultural development. Normally, about 500 people (CSO Staff, Corporate Staff, Foreign Governments representatives, Members of Parliament, Members of County Assemblies, leaders from across the spectrum and pastoralists attend the Gala Night each year.
7What is the main highlight of the event?
The three day products exhibition. The exhibition and services will showcase the potential of pastoralism and opportunities for product marketing. It provides an opportunity for State and non-state actors to showcase their work in climate smart pastoralism, publications and initiatives in promoting climate smart pastoralism; and offering corporate organisations a market for their products and services. Some of the products and services include: i) Livestock insurance ii) Micro finance (supporting pastoralist pastoralism) iii) Clean Energy Initiatives
